Kerala High Court sets October 14 deadline for Nilambur-Nanjangud DPR

The Kerala High Court directed the Railways to complete the Nilambur-Nanjangud line DPR by October 14. The order presses officials to clarify whether the project has moved to the approval stage.

The Kerala High Court has directed the Railways to prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Nilambur-Nanjangud railway line by October 14. The court also asked the Railways to state in an affidavit on that date whether the DPR has been placed before the competent authority for approval and sanction.

A bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V M passed the order while hearing a plea related to the proposed rail link between Nilambur in Kerala and Nanjangud in Karnataka. The plea said railway connectivity was needed in the Malabar region and that the matter was not being considered despite several representations.

The petition was moved by C N Vijayakrishnan, chairman of the Kozhikode-based Cancer and Allied Ailment Research (CARE) Foundation, which runs the MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute. In his plea, he claimed there was a need for railway connectivity in the Malabar region, but the authorities were not considering it despite repeated representations.

In July this year, the Southern Railway filed an affidavit saying the Railway Board had sanctioned the Final Location Survey for the Nilambur-Nanjangud Railway Project. It said a LIDAR survey and a traffic survey needed for the exercise were being carried out, and that the DPR was under preparation. After completion, it would be submitted to the Railway Board for consideration.

The Railways also told the court that implementation of the Nilambur-Nanjangud Railway Project would depend on approval and sanction by the competent authority. Referring to the affidavit filed on July 27, 2026, the bench said, "We hope that by this time the DPR must have been prepared and if not, it should be prepared by the adjourned date (October 14) and placed before this court in the form of an affidavit. The affidavit must indicate whether the DPR has been placed before the competent authority for approval and sanction of the Nilambur-Nanjangud Railway Project."

The court has now asked the Railways to complete the DPR by October 14 and clarify whether it has been placed before the competent authority for approval and sanction of the proposed Nilambur-Nanjangud rail project.
