तीन उच्च न्यायालय के प्रमुख न्यायाधीशों को सुप्रीम कोर्ट में न्यायाधीश के पद पर नियुक्त किया गया

The Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice (Appointments Division), Government of India, notified the appointment of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh as Judges of the Supreme Court of India through a notification dated 5 October 2026.

The appointments have been made under Article 124(2) of the Constitution of India and will take effect from the date on which the respective Judges assume charge of their offices.

The three Judges were recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court by the Supreme Court Collegium on 28 September 2026.

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. He was elevated as a Judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2011 and became a permanent Judge in 2013. He subsequently served as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court before assuming charge as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in January 2025.

Following his elevation to the Supreme Court, Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre, Judge of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed to perform the duties of the office of Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from the date Justice Upadhyaya relinquishes charge.

Justice Sunita Agarwal

Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, has also been appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. She was elevated to the Allahabad High Court in 2011 and became a permanent Judge in 2013. She was appointed Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court in July 2023.

Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, Judge of the Gujarat High Court, has been appointed to perform the duties of the office of Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court from the date Justice Agarwal relinquishes charge.

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, has been appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. He was elevated to the Jharkhand High Court in 2012 and later served as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court before assuming charge as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court in July 2025.

Following his elevation, Justice Puthichira Sam Koshy, Judge of the Telangana High Court, has been appointed as Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court from the date Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh relinquishes charge.

The appointments of Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre, Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak and Justice Puthichira Sam Koshy were also notified by the Department of Justice on 5 October 2026 under Article 223 of the Constitution. The arrangements will take effect when the three incumbent Chief Justices assume office as Judges of the Supreme Court.
