Mahua Moitra has approached the Calcutta High Court after eggs were allegedly thrown at her during a visit to her constituency, Krishnanagar. Her plea alleged that police failed to enforce a court-ordered security cover.

Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra has moved the Calcutta High Court, alleging police inaction after eggs were thrown at her during a visit to her Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal earlier this month.

In her plea, Moitra said the September 16 incident happened despite an earlier interim order of the high court directing police to provide her security whenever she visited the constituency till the end of September. The court said the matter will be heard as per the serial list.

According to her counsel Arka Nag, police did not act properly to ensure Moitra's security during the incident at Tehatta in Nadia district, where members of a rival party waved black flags and allegedly pelted eggs at her vehicle.

On an earlier petition by Moitra, the high court had directed police to provide two security personnel to the MP till the end of September whenever she visited her constituency. Moitra, who is aligned with the Mamata Banerjee faction of the TMC, has on several occasions claimed that political elements opposed to her were pelting eggs at her and humiliating her during visits to her constituency after the change in government in West Bengal.

Moitra, a two-term MP from Krishnanagar, had alleged on September 16 that seven to 10 BJP workers, including the local mandal president and the president and vice-president of the panchayat samiti, threw eggs at her during a party programme. She had also gone live on social media during the confrontation and questioned how eggs could be thrown at her in the presence of police personnel. In the clip, broken eggshells could be seen on her face.

The petition centres on Moitra's allegation that police failed to act despite a court order on her security, after she was targeted with black flags and egg pelting during her constituency visit.
