The Calcutta High Court extended interim protection from coercive action to Mamata All India Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in a hate speech case. The order keeps her shield intact while the court hears her plea to cancel the proceedings.

The Calcutta High Court has extended interim protection from coercive action to Mamata All India Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra till January 29, 2027, in a hate speech case. The court was told that Moitra had appeared before police in Nadia district on August 14 and answered questions from investigating officers, as directed earlier.

Hearing both sides, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya also fixed January 13 as the next date of hearing. Moitra has sought cancellation of the criminal proceedings against her, claiming the allegations made in the case were concocted and motivated.

Advocate General Surojit Nath Mitra, appearing for the West Bengal government, submitted a report stating that Moitra had appeared before Hogalberia police station and cooperated with the investigation. The communication also said the probe into the alleged hate speech case was continuing.

Moitra's lawyer told the court that she was not subjected to egg pelting when she appeared at the police station on August 14. Earlier, he had claimed that such attacks took place whenever she visited her Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district.

Justice Bhattacharyya had granted Moitra interim protection in the case on July 21 and directed her to appear before the investigating officer on August 14 for questioning. The court had then ordered that no coercive steps be taken against her till October 5, subject to compliance with the conditions imposed.

On her lawyer's request, the judge had also directed the police to ensure that she was not subjected to egg pelting when she appeared before the investigating agency.

With the latest order, the interim protection has now been extended till January 29, 2027, while the court continues to hear Moitra's plea seeking to cancel the case registered at Hogalberia police station.
