NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday reserved its verdict on the timeline prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for introducing front of pack warning labels (FoPL) on packaged food products.The court observed that the timeline given by the food regulator was unreasonable, while appreciating the efforts made by FSSAI on the issue. It further made it clear that the order would be passed in the interest of the country and its citizens and that the regulator would have to comply with the directions.The Supreme Court has reserved the verdict on the timeline as well as other issues relating to compliance with FoPL requirements.What is FSSAI's front-of-pack warning label proposal?FSSAI has proposed front-of-pack warning labels (FoPL) for packaged food products that are high in nutrients such as added sugar, added saturated fat and salt. The aim is to give consumers a prominent warning on the front of the pack rather than requiring them to look at the detailed nutrition table on the back.FSSAI had initially proposed a red hexagonal warning system in two phases. The first phase was to cover products high in two or more specified nutrients, while the second phase was to extend the warning to products high in any one of them.What kind of warning label has FSSAI proposed?Under the proposal, the warning would appear in a red hexagon and could carry declarations such as âHIGH FATâ, âHIGH SUGARâ and âHIGH SALTâ.
