The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday granted relief to viral Kumbh girl Monalisa Bhosle by setting aside an order that changed her date of birth and recorded her as a minor at the time of her marriage. The Indore bench held that such a significant change could not be made without giving Monalisa an opportunity to present her side.

According to the NDTV report, tustice Gajendra Singh set aside the March 31 order of the Maheshwar Chief Municipal Officer, which had cancelled Monalisa’s earlier birth entry. Her original birth certificate, issued on June 5, 2025, mentioned January 1, 2008, as her date of birth. The revised record mentioned December 30, 2009, making her 16 instead of 18 when she married actor Farman Khan on March 11, 2026.

The court directed the municipal authority to reconsider her father’s application after giving Monalisa an effective hearing. It also made clear that it was not deciding which of the two dates is actually correct.

The court stressed that simply informing Monalisa’s father about the proceedings was not enough when the decision directly affected Monalisa’s rights. Justice Singh referred to the principle of audi alteram partem, under which a person affected by an official decision must be given a chance to be heard.

The court also observed that changing her date of birth by nearly two years could affect important rights, including voting, entering contracts, financial independence and her personal choice in marriage.

Dispute Began After Monalisa’s Marriage

Monalisa became widely known after videos of her selling beads and garlands at the 2025 Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj went viral. She later entered the film industry and married Farman Khan in Kerala in March 2026.

Her father subsequently challenged the January 1, 2008 birth date, claiming that hospital records showed she was born on December 30, 2009, at the Community Health Centre in Maheshwar. Authorities relied on that record while changing the birth entry.

Monalisa and her husband challenged the decision, claiming that records had been changed after her marriage to portray her as a minor. They also relied on documents including her Aadhaar, PAN and voter ID, which carried the 2008 date. The court did not decide these allegations.

The change in her recorded age later became part of criminal proceedings against Farman under child protection laws. The High Court’s latest order, however, deals only with the procedure followed in changing Monalisa’s birth record and does not validate the marriage or decide the criminal cases.
