NEW DELHI: Four women wrestlers on Friday moved a Delhi court challenging the acquittal of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a sexual harassment case filed in 2023.

The appeal, likely to come up for hearing before Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh on Saturday, challenges the August 3 order of a magisterial court acquitting Singh and former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar. The petition has described the acquittal order as “erroneous and unsustainable in law”.

On August 3, the magisterial court acquitted Singh, who was also a former BJP MP, in the case filed by six women wrestlers, including World Championships medallist Vinesh Phogat, citing lack of evidence. The court also granted relief to Tomar, citing lack of evidence and contradictory testimonies.

“Both accused stand acquitted,” Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwini Panwar said in an in-camera verdict.

A separate FIR filed by a minor wrestler was closed by a court in May 2025 following a police investigation. The court had accepted a closure report filed by the police.

On May 3, 2026, Phogat revealed that she was one of the six victims in a video message posted on her social media handle X.

In the August verdict, the court accepted defence counsel’s arguments regarding inconsistencies and contradictions in witness testimonies, improbability and the ground of “alibi”. Advocate Rajiv Mohan, who represented Singh and Tomar, said the accused were “honourably acquitted”.

The police had filed a chargesheet against Singh and Tomar in June 2023 under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

In May 2024, the court framed charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the modesty of women against Singh, and criminal intimidation against Tomar.
