Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena have been appointed as permanent judges of the High Court, while Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Dr Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj have been appointed as additional judges, according to official notifications and court records.

All seven officers have spent years serving in the Delhi district judiciary, handling some of the capital's most important civil, criminal and administrative matters before their elevation.

Why do these Delhi High Court appointments matter?

Judges are often appointed to High Courts from two broad streams: experienced lawyers and members of the judicial service. The latest appointments fall into the second category.

That matters because these officers bring extensive trial court experience to the High Court bench.

Unlike constitutional courts that primarily hear appeals and complex legal questions, district judges spend years dealing directly with evidence, witnesses, criminal trials, family disputes and civil litigation. Delhi High Court strength rises, but vacancies remain

The appointments also address a long-running challenge faced by courts across India: vacancies.

The Delhi High Court has a sanctioned strength of 60 judges. Before these appointments, the court was functioning with a significantly lower number. With the induction of the seven new judges, the working strength of the High Court has risen to 50, bringing it closer to its sanctioned capacity.

While vacancies still remain, the latest additions are expected to ease pressure on benches handling thousands of pending matters.

Arun Bhardwaj's elevation draws attention

Among the newly elevated judges, Arun Bhardwaj's appointment has attracted particular attention within legal circles. Before taking oath, Bhardwaj was serving as the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court, one of the most senior administrative positions within the institution. His elevation reflects a career that combined judicial work with court administration, an increasingly important aspect of managing modern courts.

Several of the other appointees have also served as Principal District and Sessions Judges, Special Judges and in other senior judicial roles across Delhi.

What happens next for the Delhi High Court?

For litigants, these appointments are about more than numbers.

Every additional judge means more benches, more hearings and potentially quicker disposal of cases. While no single round of appointments can solve India's judicial backlog, legal observers say strengthening High Courts remains one of the most important steps in improving access to justice.

As the seven newly sworn-in judges take their seats on the bench, the immediate task before them will be familiar: interpreting the law, hearing appeals and helping one of India's most influential High Courts tackle an ever-growing docket.
