On 25 September 2026, the Supreme Court of India announced the schedule for the Advocates-on-Record Examination — December 2026, to be conducted exclusively for candidates eligible to re-appear under Regulation 11(i) or 11(ii) of the Regulations regarding Advocates-on-Record Examination.

Applications may be submitted from 1 October 2026 to 15 October 2026 in the AOR Examination Cell, Room No. 308, Administrative Buildings Complex, Supreme Court of India, New Delhi.

Key Details:

The notification has been issued under Rules 5(i) and (ii) of Order IV of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013 read with Regulation 2 of the Regulations regarding Advocates-on-Record Examination.

The Advocates-on-Record Examination—December 2026 will be held on 19, 20, 22 and 23 December 2026 at New Delhi.

-

The examination is open only to candidates eligible to re-appear under Regulation 11(i) or 11(ii) arising from the results of the AOR Examination—June 2025 and earlier examinations.

-

Eligible candidates may either: -

Re-appear in the paper(s) in which they were unsuccessful; or

-

Opt to appear in the entire examination afresh. The option exercised at the time of application will be final and binding.

Eligible candidates may apply for the Advocates-on-Record Examination — December 2026 between 1 and 15 October 2026, with applications closing at 5:00 PM on 15 October.

The examination comprises four papers: -

Practice and Procedure of the Supreme Court;

-

Drafting;

-

Advocacy and Professional Ethics; and

-

Leading Cases.

-

-

No application or representation seeking re-evaluation of answer sheets will be entertained under Regulation 12.

Candidates who are allotted roll numbers but remain absent may be treated as not sufficiently prepared and may be debarred from subsequent examinations except with the permission of the Board of Examiners.

A candidate who fails in all papers of the examination will not be permitted to appear in the next examination under Regulation 11(iii).

-

Candidates who do not appear in all the papers and fail in any paper in which they have appeared will be treated as having failed in all the papers, including the papers they did not appear in.

-

Candidates are generally restricted to five attempts, although the December 2021 examination will not be counted as an attempt pursuant to a one-time relaxation.

The AOR Examination—December 2026 will be conducted through pen-and-paper mode only.

Notice I: Paper II (Drafting)

The syllabus covers petitions for special leave, petitions of appeal, statements of cases, decrees, orders and writs. It also includes:

-

Plaints and written statements in suits under Article 131 of the Constitution;

-

Review petitions under Article 137;

-

Transfer petitions under Section 25 of the CPC, 1908, Article 139 of the Constitution and Section 446 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023;

-

Contempt petitions under Article 129; and

-

Interlocutory applications, including bail, condonation of delay, exemption from surrender and revocation of special leave.

Notice II: Paper III (Advocacy and Professional Ethics)

The indicative syllabus covers:

-

Professional ethics, the legal profession, advocacy, its history, purposes and development;

-

The Advocates Act, 1961, Bar Council of India Rules, professional conduct, etiquette and misconduct;

-

Duties of advocates, conflict of interest, confidentiality, lawyer-client relationships and professional negligence;

-

Legal services, equal justice, commercialisation of the profession and comparative professional ethics;

-

Advocacy in the adversarial system, criminal defence and prosecutorial ethics;

-

Counselling, negotiation, mediation and ethical considerations; and

-

Supreme Court practice, duties of Advocates-on-Record, adjournments, contempt of court and the profession’s role in the administration of justice.

Notice III: Paper IV (Leading Cases)

Headnotes of the prescribed leading cases will be provided by the Registry in the examination hall and must be returned to the invigilators after the examination. Candidates must not underline or mark them.

The syllabus prescribes 86 leading cases covering significant constitutional, civil, criminal, commercial, arbitration, insolvency and administrative law decisions of the Supreme Court.

Application & Eligibility Highlights

-

Candidates must submit a duly filled application form, recent photograph, self-attested enrolment certificate and proof of payment of the ₹750 examination fee by 5:00 PM on 15 October 2026, failing which the application will not be accepted.

-

Eligible PwBD/PwD candidates may avail a scribe facility subject to prescribed medical certification; the scribe must not be a law graduate or law student, and candidates using a scribe will be entitled to 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour of examination.

-

The final acceptance of the application is subject to receipt of the hard copy of the application form and supporting documents by the Registry.

Any applicant found ineligible at any stage will have the application rejected.
