Retiring MP High Court Judge Avanindra Kumar Singh To Donate ₹1.1 Crore Retirement Benefits To PM CARES Fund

Justice Avanindra Kumar Singh of the Madhya Pradesh High Court announced at his retirement that he will donate his entire General Provident Fund payout of about Rs. 1 Crore to the PM Cares Fund.

Speaking at his farewell reference on Thursday (September 17), Justice Singh announced two major decisions. First, he announced that he will donate his entire GPF Payout of about Rs. 1 Crore to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM Cares Fund).

Second, Justice Singh announced that he and his wife will donate their bodies post their demise for medical education and scientific advancement.

Reflecting on his philosophy behind these choices, Justice Singh said:

"After retirement, today, I will begin a new chapter in my life, and I will always continue to work on a new platform. I believe that we serve the God not only by worshipping Him, but also by taking care of all things, big and small God has created on this Earth. Therefore, to give to the society on the principle that Apne Liye Jiye Toh Kya Jiye' (If we live only for ourselves, what kind of life is that?) my wife and I have registered pledge two days before to the medical college, after our death our bodies, so it can be used for scientific purpose. As per office calculation I would be receiving about Rs. 1.1 Crore in my GPF Account which I pledge before you all to donate the entire amount as soon as I receive for national building in PM Cares Fund and this step is the beginning and not the end"

Justice Singh thereafter thanked the Chief Justice AY Kogje stating that the Chief Justice is a "man of exceptional and outstanding qualities" and is kind, considerate as well as a jurist par excellence.

Justice Singh, in his speech, stated that his career spanned 37 years. During his address, he expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his mentors, senior judges, registry staff, and administrative authorities who supported him throughout this journey.

Justice Singh also shared stories of his childhood, reflecting on loss of his mother when he was a child and how he was raised by his maternal aunt "like her son". He stated that his father, his maternal aunt, and her husband had a great impact on him. Quoting his aunt, he said:

"She always said that there is no shortcut to success in life; any success which is attained without hard work and sincere effort does not last long".

Concluding his speech, Justice Singh remarked that retirement does not mark an end, but rather the beginning of a new chapter of public service from a different platform.

Justice Singh joined the Judicial Service as Civil Judge Class-II on May 31, 1990. He was later posted as Principal District Judge in Chhatarpur in 2018 and Principal District Judge in Dhar in 2022. He was sworn in as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 1, 2023 until his retirement on September 18.
